Historic Ciqikou Welcomes Thousands Over May Day Holliday

2025-05-08

This May Day holiday, Ciqikou Ancient Town in Shapingba District proved once again why it's one of Chongqing’s most beloved historic destinations. Over the first two days of the holiday, the centuries-old riverside town drew more than 240,000 visitors eager to explore its cobblestone streets, sample regional delicacies, and experience the living heritage of Bayu culture.

Strolling through Ciqikou, visitors encountered a vibrant mix of tradition and modernity. With its preserved architecture, teahouses, and artisanal shops, the town offered a nostalgic window into old Chongqing, while new festivals and events brought fresh energy to the historic lanes.

This year’s festivities were part of a larger holiday celebration titled “Youth in Bloom: Gathering in Shapingba,” launched shortly after the district hosted its “Global Alumni” Half Marathon on April 20. As a main venue for the event, Ciqikou Ancient Town introduced new attractions and consumer experiences under themes such as “Reviving Youthful Memories” and “Moments in Time at Shaci.” Visitors enjoyed a seamless blend of shopping, dining, sightseeing, and cultural activities, designed to reintroduce Ciqikou as not just a preserved site, but a vibrant hub of urban culture.

Xian Cong, a visitor from Chengdu, came specifically for the food—and was not disappointed. “There are so many signature dishes from across Chongqing packed into one place,” she said. “You can literally taste your way through the region in one afternoon.”

For Tan Yu, a native of Chongqing now working in Guangzhou, the holiday was a homecoming. “It’s been years since I visited with my family,” she said. “Ciqikou feels more alive than ever—busier, better managed, and full of new things to discover. The improvements really stand out.”

Ciqikou spans nearly 100 acres, with a core historic district covering over 17 acres. After a major renovation and expansion in 2021, the site increased its maximum daily capacity to more than 300,000 visitors, allowing even greater access while preserving its historic character.

Whether you’re drawn by heritage, food, or a taste of riverside tranquility, Ciqikou continues to prove that history and hospitality can thrive side by side—and that the spirit of an old town can still inspire new memories.
