2025-12-04

SISU celebrated 10 years of cultivating talent for international organizations at a high-level forum on Nov. 29, held at the Gele Academy. The event also marked the official launch of the Chongqing Institute for Global Governance. SISU Party Secretary Liu Sifang delivered opening remarks. The forum featured addresses by Sun Shuzhong, professor at Nanjing University and former Chinese ambassador to Rwanda and Morocco; and Xue Yuxue, former country director of the United Nations Development Programme in Afghanistan and Indonesia. Zhou Yi, deputy director of the Chongqing Foreign Affairs Office, attended, and Luo Bo, SISU vice president, presided over the forum.

In his remarks, Liu underscored that preparing talent for international organizations is a strategic task central to China’s participation in global governance. He noted that such talent is also essential for Chongqing’s goal of building a regional hub for inland openness. Liu stressed the need for professionals with global vision, strong foreign-language skills, solid knowledge of international rules and negotiations, and a commitment to public service. He expressed hope that the forum would spark deeper exchange, strengthen consensus, and promote innovation in talent development. He also encouraged experts to use the forum as a platform to advance collaborative training models, refine curriculum design, and help young people prepare for roles in global governance.

In his speech, Ambassador Sun reflected on his decade-long connection with SISU and praised the university’s achievement in building—from the ground up—a leading training base for international-organization talent in Southwest China. He commended the development path of SISU’s “LEAP” training model.

Liu, Zhou, Sun and Xue jointly unveiled the Chongqing Institute for Global Governance. The new institute marks a major step forward in SISU’s efforts to align with national strategies, support Chongqing’s development as an inland gateway for international exchange, and build talent pipelines for global governance.

The keynote session was moderated by Zhu Tianxiang, director of SISU’s Office of International Cooperation and Exchange. Cui Shoujun analyzed opportunities and challenges for international-organization talent training in the current international environment. Xie Tao, dean of the School of International Relations at Beijing Foreign Studies University, shared experiences in program innovation. Song Guohua, dean of SISU’s School of International Relations and the Chongqing Institute for Global Governance, reviewed SISU’s decade of practice in talent development.

Two parallel sessions followed. The first, moderated by Xie, focused on global-governance initiatives and international-organization talent development. Experts from Zhejiang International Studies University, Beijing Language and Culture University, China Foreign Affairs University, Tianjin Foreign Studies University, Shanghai University of International Business and Economics, and Beijing International Studies University discussed topics ranging from shifts in the international system to curriculum design and teaching practice.

The second session, chaired by Jia Lieying of Beijing Language and Culture University, examined local practices in training talent for international organizations. Scholars from Jilin International Studies University, Shandong University, Xi’an International Studies University, Dalian University of Foreign Languages and SISU discussed practical challenges, institutional innovations, and the development of interdisciplinary skills.

In closing remarks, Dean Song said the founding of the Chongqing Institute for Global Governance and the success of the forum would serve as a catalyst for deeper collaboration and innovation. He emphasized SISU’s commitment to bringing together diverse resources to train high-quality, multidisciplinary talent capable of contributing to China’s engagement in global governance.
