SISU Academy Releases New Report on Chongqing’s Engagement with SCO Countries

2025-09-24

The Academy of International and Regional Studies at SISU has released the 22nd volume in its “Chongqing’s International Engagement” research series. The new report, “Chongqing and SCO Countries: Current Situation and Prospects,” examines the city’s role in deepening ties within the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

The SCO has grown into one of the world’s largest regional organizations, now encompassing 10 member states, two observer states, and 14 dialogue partners. Against this backdrop, the report highlights Chongqing’s position as both a hub of the China–Europe Railway Express and a key inland gateway for China’s opening-up. Researchers argue that these advantages give Chongqing strategic value in advancing cooperation with SCO countries.

The study reviews the current state of engagement in trade, diplomacy, and cultural exchange between Chongqing and SCO members, while also outlining opportunities and challenges for future collaboration. Policy recommendations include enhancing Chongqing’s role as a logistics hub, expanding digital economy cooperation, promoting the establishment of consular institutions, and strengthening think tank research and talent development.

An appendix to the report provides detailed trade data and a chronology of major cooperation milestones. According to the authors, these resources aim to offer both academic insight and practical guidance for policymakers working to expand Chongqing’s presence and influence within the SCO framework.
