Translation Projects Defense Held in SISU

 

On May 13, a proposal defense for the Chinese Academic Translation Project of the National Social Science Fund of China was held in the meeting room of College of Translation and Interpreting , Sichuan International Studies University.

Two associate professors of College of Translation and Interpreting, SISU, Li Haifeng and Hou, Yixi made a defense proposal on their translation projects "Ancient Beijing and Western Civilization" (approval number: 21WZSB007) and "Interpretation of Chinese Embroidery Culture" (approval number: 21WYSB008 ).respectively.

The defense was chaired by Professor Hu Anjiang, Director of the Scientific Research Office of SISU. The judge panel was composed of Professor Li Jinshu, Dean of College of Translation and Interpreting, Professor Fu Xiaowei, Director of the Institute of Sino-Jewish Culture at Sichuan International Studies University, Professor Zhong Yi of College of Translation and Interpreting, Parker Walker ( Xuan Yifeng), an American language expert, Professor Ouyang Zhesheng, the Department of History of Peking University, and Bradely George Auger, a language expert from Canada.

Associate Professor Li Haifeng briefed the judge panel the academic value of "Ancient Beijing and Western Civilization", and the translation technologies he is going to employ and the marketing strategy for the English version of the book. Professor Fu Xiaowei believes that Li’s translation project can help foreign readers have a better understanding of the history of the Yuan Dynasty and Mongolia, and the English version of the book can strengthen academic exchanges with foreign sinologists who studied Jesuits and foreign missionaries in China during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Professor Ouyang game Li Haifeng some advice on how to deal with the large number of Chinese and foreign documents in the original text. Professor Li Jinshu provided the translator with some suggestions on the translation of book titles.

In the defense, Hou Yixi outlined her plan for carrying out the translation project "Interpretation of Chinese Embroidery Culture", and the preparations and progress she had made. The experts on the judge panle offered some adivces on how to optimize the translation plan and how to improve the translation quality. Mr. Parker Walker approved Hou’s use of terminology from the perspective of native English speakers, and was convinced that her translation of the Chinese book can better promote the Chinese traditional handicraft. Professor Zhong Yi provided suggestions on bettering the conveying of the tone of the original text in English.

In the end, Professor Hu Anjiang gave a brief summary of the defense and encouraged the two translators to work out high-quality translations to promote the academic exchange of different peoples.
