A Profile of Shapingba District

Shapingba District is a central district in the city of Chongqing. To the east of the district flows the Jialing River, and the West towers the Jinyun Mountain. It borders Jiulongpo District in the south and Beibei District in the north. Covering an area of 396 square kilometers, Shapingba District consists of 26 towns. It has 1.48 million permanent residents and an urbanization rate of 96%.

Shapingba District is blessed with abundant cultural attractions. It is the birthplace of Bayu (Greater Chongqing) culture, and the cradle of Hongyan revolutionary spirit. The most prominent cultural attractions in this district are: the former residences of revolutionary celebrities such as General Feng Yuxiang and the poet Guo Moruo, Zazidong and Baigongguan prisons of the KMT era -- key components of the Hongyan Revolutionary Museum, and about 80 anti-Japanese aggression war sites. It is also the place where the phenomenal flowering of schools and universities during the early half of the 20^th century was poetically referred to as “Shaping Beacons of Learning”. The district has been a major writer of the history and culture of Chongqing. In the past few years, more cultural tourist attractions have sprung up in the district: Wenlvcheng (Town of Cultural Tourism), Ciqikou Houjie (Ciqikou Backstreet), Jinsha Tianjie (Jinsha Paradise Shopping Mall).

Shapingba District excels in scientific research and education. As a well-known education highland in the country, the district is a major site of the Western (Chongqing) Science City. There are 16 colleges and universities in the district, including the top ones such as Chongqing University, the Army Medical University. There are 82 well-known primary and secondary schools, of which, the Chongqing No. 1 Middle School, Nankai Secondary School, and Shuren Primary School are nationally renowned. There are 321 municipal level scientific research platforms, 129 high-tech enterprises, 1799 technology-based enterprises, 100,000 scientific and technological workers, 30,000 master or doctoral degree holders, 34 academicians from either the " Chinese Academy of Sciences " or “Chinese Academy of Engineering”. The District also boasts the Qingfeng High-tech Industry Park, the Huangjinwan●Intelligence Valley, Guanggu ●Intelligence Innovation Park, Chongqing University Industrial Park of Creative Design and other innovation platforms. The number of patents owned by 10,000 people ranks first in the whole Municipality.

The District enjoys an open and well-developed transportation network. There are two high-speed rail hubs, Chongqing West Railway Station and Chengdu-Chongqing High-speed Railway Shapingba Station in the district. The construction of the Chengdu-Chongqing High-speed Railway Science City Station is already on the agenda. The District is home to Chongqing Free Trade Pilot Zone, Xiyong Comprehensive Bonded Zone, Chongqing Railway Port, Chongqing High-tech Zone and other national development and opening platforms. In addition, Chongqing International Logistics Hub, the starting point of the Yu'Xin'Ou Railway (Chongqing-Xinjiang-Europe Railway) setting up the land-sea corridor from China to the west of Europe, is a national inland logistics hub approved by the state. The District now boasts logistics railways going "east, west, north and south" of the country. In 2021, the import and export volume of Shapingba District accounted for more than 40% of the total of the whole Municipality

The District is strong in industrial production. The District has five cornerstone industries: electronic information, equipment manufacturing, trade and commerce, modern logistics, and cultural tourism. There are 214 industrial enterprises of scale. It is an important electronic information industry base in the world. It is now home to China Electronics Technology, China Resources Microelectronics, and Jixin Technology and many other high-tech enterprises as well as some internationally renowned logistics companies such as Mapletree Singapore, Prologis, Hellmann Worldwide Logistics and Sinotrans. An industry cluster involving the production of the whole chain of digital products is now in place. One out of every four laptops in the world is manufactured in Shapingba District.
