The first lesson of the new school year:they carry on the spirit of soccer

2023-09-05

On the evening of August 31, as the sun set with a breathtaking display of colors, four college freshmen, Qin Furong, Ran Yufeng, Tan Zhaoyu, and Ma Shitong, returned to their alma mater: Sanhe Township Primary School in Shizhu Tujia Autonomous County, Chongqing.

They were there to give the first lesson of the new school year to the school's girls' soccer team. Six years ago, they themselves were members of the schools’ girls' soccer team.

Sanhe Township Primary School, a typical township school in Shizhu County, has achieved legendary status in Chongqing's primary school girls' soccer scene. Since 2013, this team, comprised of disadvantaged left-behind children, and lacking professional coaching and adequate training facilities, has consistently secured top honors in both national and city-wide school soccer leagues.

Up to this year, the first batch of 20 players from Three Rivers Town Primary School's girls' soccer team has seen 19 of them gaining admission to universities. Football has served as their pathway out of the mountains, allowing them to venture to different parts of the country. As the new school year begins, they have come back to their alma mater to engage in friendly matches with and share their experiences with the younger players on the Three Rivers Town Primary School girls' soccer team.

After the lesson, Qin Dajun, the former Vice Principal of Sanhe Township Primary School, showed the visitors the freshly refurbished soccer honor hall of the school. “These trophies were all earned through their dedication”, pointing at the shining gold trophies, numbering over a dozen, he told the girls' soccer team members, "You should draw inspiration from the determination and hard work of your former soccer team members. I hope that one day, your own trophies will be proudly displayed here.”
