The Department of German, established in 1961, is the only department to offer both graduate and four-year programmes to students of German in Southwest China. It trains interpreters, translators, researchers and university teachers of German. On its teaching staff are 2 professors and 8 associate professors. The department, keeping close ties with German language and literature circles in foreign countries, has sent most of its teachers to study or to work abroad and, in return, teachers and experts come to teach in the department every year.
The department offers more than a dozen compulsory courses in German with the emphasis on Fundamental German, Advanced German, Audio-visual Course, Reading, Translation, Interpreting, Writing, Oral German and Business German.
